Theater

Visitation Academy’s Theatre Program focuses on each student’s expression of her thoughts, freedom, and creativity. Through movement and speech, our students learn the joys of the stage, and some eventually move on to performing arts high schools. This program culminates annually in mini in-school performances. The Theater Program regularly collaborates with the Language Arts department, where recent productions include revised versions of Little Women.

Annually the Theater Program collaborates with the Music Department in the Senior Class Production, using full costumes, full sets, musicians, wireless microphones, lights and props. Although it may be solely the 8th Grade on the stage performing, many middle school students help with the behind-the-scenes aspects of putting on a production, including wardrobe, ushering, painting sets, building props, selling tickets and most aspects of technical theater (lights, sound, etc.)

Music

Our Music Program begins in Pre-K, and runs through 8th Grade. The program exposes students to reading notes on a staff, identifying periods of history through music, and the joy of creating sounds with various instruments. Different cultures, styles of music, and identifying instruments by sound are the focal points of our music department. With the invention of technology, the Music Program aims to immerse students in Music Technology through STEM lessons, including Music Sequencing, looping and editing using GarageBand on both laptops and iPads.

Visitation Academy is a special place to learn music, and we are proud to have produced the only all-girls British-Style Brass Band program in the United States. In the 5th Grade, students choose which instrument they would like to learn from a list of cornet, alto horn, baritone, trombone or percussion. After their selection every student in the Middle School has 2 hours of instruction per week, and participates in performances twice a year.

Students learn to read music specific to their learned instrument and how to participate in a musical piece as part of an ensemble. This teaches our Middle School students how to collaborate and work together to create beautiful pieces of music. Students also answer listening questions on a variety of musical genres, including Musical Theater, Brass Band, Pop, Classical and Modern.

After-School Activities

The Music Department is extremely pleased to offer three after-school programs: Chapel Choir, Cabaret Troupe and Junior Cab Troupe.

The Chapel Choir rehearse every Tuesday and participate in all of the school’s masses throughout the year. They are a staple addition to First Friday masses throughout the year, as well as special masses such as Graduation, Confirmation and Advent Lighting.

The Cabaret Troupe rehearse every Thursday after school and give two performances a year. Their Christmas show is a full production and occasionally tours around around the Bay Ridge area. The year ends with a final full production with sets and costumes.
