Music
is offered from the lower school throughout the upper school. Twice
a week students are offered classes in music comprehension, theory,
ear training, solfege, history and appreciation in a stepped
curriculum. Students are also taught songs by way of rounds, cannons
and eventually 2-part harmony. Performances include our Christmas
show, lower and upper school Spring Concerts and various events
throughout the community.
Ensembles Offered at Visitation Academy
The Academy Brass Band

The British Brass Band tradition began in Industrial Era England. It
served as a way for factories, mills and mines to improve worker
morale. As the tradition grew, youth ensembles grew up around the
brass band tradition. In 1996, the first ever school based
British-styled brass band was started here in the United States.
Soon thereafter, the first All-Girl Brass Band was founded right
here at Visitation Academy. Students begin the brass band in the 5th
grade, and continue through the 8th grade. The ensemble
performs throughout the community and collaborates with other
instrumental programs throughout the city.
The Cabaret Troupe
Founded
in 2006, The Cabaret Troupe acts as the musical ambassador of the
Visitation Academy community. The ensemble, which meets weekly after
school, performs works from musical theater, the jazz era and
numerous other genres.
The Chapel Choir
An
important part of the religious life here at Visitation, the chapel
choir is a very important component of the music program. Students
are eligible to participate from grade 3 and up. The ensemble sings
as part of our First Friday mass, and participates in many of our
liturgies and concerts in parishes throughout Bay Ridge.
