The Middle School
Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies
The Middle School Program at Visitation Academy follows the
guidelines and standards set forth by the New York State Department
of Education for Language Arts, Social Studies, Mathematics, and
Science. Active learning provides students with the opportunity to
explore the curriculum and to deepen their understanding of
curriculum content.
All students study French, Music, Art, and Theatre with specialists
in these fields. Physical Education takes place either in the gym or
on the outdoor field, which is part of the 7.5-acre campus. The
Religion program is taught by the Sisters of the Visitation and is
rooted in Salesian tradition and gospel values.
Reading, writing, and analysis take place across disciplines.
Expository writing is used in all subject areas. Students are
grouped heterogeneously and learn to work independently and as part
of a collaborative group. Projects and presentations are part of
each unit of study. Traditional and alternative assessments are
conducted on a regular basis, giving students the opportunity to
express their knowledge in a variety of formats.
Technology is an integral part of the curriculum. Classes in all
subject areas are regularly held in the Media Center. Students gain
proficiency with a variety of computer programs and applications.
The Media Center facilitates a deeper understanding of concepts
studied through the use of the Internet, computer software, and
mediums other than print.
The Visitation school environment is a safe and positive atmosphere
for critical thinking and intellectual curiosity. The small class
size fosters creativity and provides individual attention to
students’ needs and development. Students have exceptional
opportunities for on-going learning experiences in an environment
that promotes self-esteem, respect for others, and an appreciation
of diversity in gifts, beliefs, and customs.
