Grade 1
Language Arts
* Philosophy of Language Arts curriculum: Balanced literacy
* Genres include fiction, non-fiction, poetry, and fairy tales
* Skills developed include language acquisition, phonics, spelling
reading skills
* The writing process includes the introduction of grammar,
capitalization, punctuation, topic sentences, and supporting
details.
* Students are encouraged to express themselves through creative
writing and personal journals.
Social Studies
* Focus of Social Studies curriculum: The exploration of our
community within the framework of the larger community.
* Components include the community of both family and school,
workers, locations, celebrations and events.
* Knowledge of other cultures and the acceptance of ethnic
differences is encouraged, practiced, and celebrated.
Mathematics
* Philosophy of Mathematics curriculum: Hands-on investigation and
reading in mathematics
* Students use manipulatives in both individual and group settings.
* Topics include: numeration and the relationship between numbers;
addition and subtraction of single- and double-digit numbers;
geometric shapes in patterning and sequencing; the study of money
(recognition of coins and paper); time; and measurement in the
customary and metric systems.
* Problem solving is approached using estimation techniques
Science
* Philosophy of Science curriculum: Observation and hands-on
experiments
* Topics include: investigation of living and non-living things;
observing changes in the environment, as well as in plant and animal
life
