Curriculum
Grade 5
Literature provides the focus of the Language Arts curriculum.
Throughout the year, students read novels, poetry, and non-fiction.
Language arts skills, grammar reading comprehension, spelling,
vocabulary and essay writing are reinforced through the literature.
Individual spelling, vocabulary and grammar books are also used.
Students work on a variety of projects and read a wide range of
literature to enhance and develop their skills. Students are
encouraged to express themselves creatively through projects,
speeches, and dramatic presentations that relate to the work being
studied.
Grade 6
The Language Arts curriculum uses literature as a focal point.
Historical fiction and mythology are two genres that are used to
coordinate with the Social Studies curriculum. An emphasis is placed
on expository writing as well as the development of inferential and
critical thinking skills. The development of vocabulary and grammar
skills is implemented through the literature. Additionally,
individual books devoted to grammar and vocabulary are studied.
Projects and dramatic presentations are used to enhance
comprehension and the synthesis of the literature studied.
Grade 7
The focal point of the Language Arts curriculum is literature. A
broad range is studied, including the novel, historical fiction,
science fiction, biographies, and drama. Specific language arts
skills such as writing, grammar, and vocabulary are reinforced
through the literature as well as individual skill books. Projects,
seminars, and oral presentation follow the study of a literary work.
Culminating projects follow each unit of study giving students an
opportunity to hone their writing and oral skills as well as their
individual creativity.
Grade 8
The Language Arts curriculum focuses on critical thinking and
literary analysis through the study of literature, preparing
students for the transition to high school. Students read from a
variety of genres. Expository and report writing are emphasized.
Vocabulary and grammar are studied in conjunction with the literary
selections. Students in the Eighth Grade are still afforded an
opportunity to write fiction and poetry and are well prepared for
high school. Literature is used as a springboard for both expository
and creative writing. Public speaking is incorporated into the
curriculum through presentations, reports, and persuasive speeches.
